Children/Youth

Bashkir State Univeristy

A. Education/type of schooling

-provision is made for any child to study in his/her own native language; however, all children grow up studying Russian as a primary language

-there has been a renewed emphasis by the government to stress the importance of education; there has been considerable investment in technology (computers, vcrs) to bring updated educational approaches.

-students are expected in many cases to continue past secondary school into technical institutes, college, or higher-education studies

-at the secondary level Russian language becomes a compulsory subject

B. Labor/tasks

-as a general rule children in the villages are expected to share an amount of the daily chores of a household

-in the cities, young people generally do not work until they have finished basic education and even then may work only part-time while they study in an apprentice setting or attempt higher education
